Hassel Island was cultivated for livestock on several occasions throughout history. It is written in the historical record that the Hazzell family raised goats on the land in the late 18th Century. Since the land’s separation from mainland St. Thomas, the isolation has limited the fauna residing on the island.
While visiting Hassel Island, keep an eye out for iguanas, lizards, land crabs and tortoises.
If you hear a loud rustling noise in the brush beside the trail, you have just been spotted by an iguana!
